Srikakulam on High Alert as Cyclone Threat Looms; Officials Step Up Preparedness:
SRIKAKULAM: The district administration has intensified preparedness measures in view of a potential cyclone threat along the North Andhra and southern Odisha coasts, directing all departments to remain alert and prioritise public safety.
During a review meeting held on Friday, officials discussed the possible intensification of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal into a deep depression and subsequently a cyclone around October 26, according to the weather forecast available at the time.
Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected
The weather system was forecast to bring heavy rainfall to coastal areas between October 27 and 29. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 90 kmph were also expected on October 27 and 28.
In view of the potential impact, the district administration has instructed concerned departments to strengthen emergency response arrangements and remain prepared to handle any situation.
Residents are advised to follow the latest weather bulletins and official announcements.
Control Rooms to Remain Operational
Officials have been directed to establish control rooms at divisional headquarters and maintain round-the-clock vigilance.
Special attention will be given to flood-prone locations, low-lying areas and houses vulnerable to strong winds and heavy rainfall. People living in unsafe locations should be moved to safer places and designated rehabilitation centres whenever necessary.
Departments have also been instructed to coordinate their efforts to ensure a timely response to emergencies.
Fishermen Advised Not to Venture into the Sea
As a precautionary measure, fishermen have been instructed to avoid venturing into the sea from October 26, in accordance with official safety directions.
Fishing boats should be secured in safe locations to prevent damage from rough seas and strong winds. Marine police and other concerned authorities have been asked to coordinate coastal patrols and monitor the situation.
Fishermen should strictly follow the latest marine weather warnings.
Farmers Urged to Protect Crops
Heavy rainfall and strong winds could affect agricultural activities, particularly crops that are ready for harvest.
Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops and move harvested grain to safe warehouses or storage facilities.
Agriculture officials are expected to coordinate with farmers and provide guidance based on local weather conditions.
